Friendship Test

One of the many sketches I've done in the sketchbooks people have purchased. This one is for Nuv, a friend from work and a strong supporter of mine. Nuv is a big fan of the creature that was on the first page of my 2007 24 Hour Comic noble failure. I fact, one day, he'll actually own the original page. Until then, I hope this will do! This a page from my failed 24 Hour comic attempt of 2007. I'm thinking of giving the 24 Hour Comics Day another go. It's on October 18th this year. So I have enough time to make sure I'm well rested for it!

Say It Isn't So

I tried. I really did. But, sadly, I only managed to do 12 hours of my 24 Hour comic challenge attempt this weekend before I decided to throw in the towel. There were a few factors that lead me to that conclusion, the biggest one being that my story sucked ass. Writing is hard enough but having serious time constraints heaped on as well makes the job of creating a fulfilling story extremely difficult. I did manage to get a few cool pages out of the time I put in at the drawing table, however. The image above is page 1 (Click on it to see it bigger). Very Sienkiewiczesque, no?

I may scan them and put the rest of the pages on the web if I get the time/urge....

A Day In The Life

My 24 hour comic is finally online for all to ridicule... er... read!

I did my comic on this year's International 24 Hour Comic Day (October 7/8) in the comfortable confines of my home studio. I listened to copious amounts of music (as detailed in my previous post) and lived off the sustenance of iced tea and Tim Bits (mostly sour cream ones and chocolate coconut sprinkle ones).

Amateur Hour

Success! 24 pages in 24 hours... 23 1/4 hours, actually. It was an interesting experience. My body isn't as young as it once was, which became painfully obvious around hour 19. My right hand, my drawing hand, started to cramp up, making drawing very uncomfortable. Luckily, I managed to work through it and finished up my book a few hours later.

I won't lie or try to fool myself (or you) and say that this is a good comic book. Hell, it's not even a mediocre book. After a few pages, I realized exactly why I draw comics and not write them. Yikes! In my defense, I did this 24 hour challenge to the letter. I had absolutely no plot/story/character designs/etc in hand prior to the start of the 24 hours. I made it all up on the fly. Which usually makes for a big ol' mess. And, for the most part, a big ol' mess it turned out to be. I did manage to get a few nice pages and some nice panels on so-so pages. And, I have a great sense of accomplishment.

Will I do it again, you ask? We'll see.....

I have yet to scan them all in and get them up on my site. But, I will give you a look at one of the pages (click the image above).

No Sleep Till Brooklyn

My 24 hour comic experience will begin in just a few minutes. Once 10am PST hits, I will be working on my comic and my head won't hit my pillow until the 24 hours is up.

And here I thought my "all nighter" days were over in college.

All Night Long

That's right, people. I'll be throwing my hat into the ring and seeing what 24 consecutive hours of comic book making will do to my body and soul. The challenge is to create a fully written, penciled, inked, lettered and coloured (if you want to) 24 page comic in 24 hours. With no prep work done in advance. It is sure to be a rewarding experience that will give me some insight into my creative process.

And, if my book is good, I may even share it with you.
